To paraphrase an oft-credited Jay-Z quote, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994) walked so that the Scream franchise could run. And while the film is unfortunately saddled with troubling 90’s styling, cringe-worthy dialogue, and some mediocre acting, the originality of its concept and the solidity of Craven’s direction elevate it to the unique status of probably not good, but respectable.
